Be solution driven. Henry Ford once said, “Don’t find fault, Find a remedy.”  The easy way is to criticize. However, identifying solutions requires productive thought and energy. Invest time in constructive dialogue and activities that will lead to concrete solutions.

Have a good attitude.  A positive disposition is more effective to motivate others to accomplish common goals. The ability to get along with a variety of people makes the task of leadership easier. Though getting along with others is an acquired skill that requires practice, foremost, be willing to meet people where they are.

Serving in a leader position in a non-profit capacity for the past fifteen years, I have learned several valuable lessons. Foremost, the call to lead is noble, however, the position is more than a title. Leadership is action not position, someone once said. True, for those called to lead must prepare also to work. Leader involved establishes the tone and the example for others to follow. Furthermore, leader work ethic demonstrates his capacity to get involved despite "his position" to motivate others in the process.

Board development is crucial to organizational development. A thriving organization requires a board that is committed. As a director in the nonprofit sector within a rural community for fifteen years, I understand the importance of board development. The board not only provides oversight, but is also a support component to the director and for the organization. Consider the following principles to building a successful and productive board.

There was a woman named Sally who loved shopping at flea markets and vintage stores. The thrill was in the hunt to find rare collectibles. She took pride in finding treasures that were not only priceless but within her budget.  Borgan’s was a particular favorite vintage shop she frequented. Whenever she shopped at Borgan’s, she got lost in time rummaging through merchandise.  

One day, while there, she came across a large box of LP vinyl albums. Remember those? LPs (Long Play) albums were an analog sound storage mediums in the form of a 331/3 rpm microgroove vinyl record. One of my least favorite pastimes when I was younger was public speaking. Nothing was more frightening than the thought of standing before a gawking silent crowd. Lucky for me, however, I was groomed early by well-meaning doting adults at church and school. In hindsight, I am eternally grateful for those public speaking experiences, which well prepared me. Admittedly, to this day, occasionally, I get jitters from the mere thought. However, I learned, along the way, valuable tips to make the task of public speaking easier.
